Jamshedpur: For the first time, the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College and Hospital has appointed two dedicated hospital managers. Authorities have handed this crucial administrative responsibility to Dr. Neha Jaiswal and Dr. Sonu Kumar.
Following their appointment, a critical question has gripped the city: Will their deployment bring a genuine transformation to the hospital’s management, or will the premier healthcare facility continue to run on its outdated, inefficient systems?
While a newly constructed hospital building boasts modern facilities built at an estimated cost of ₹400 crore, the overall operations have yet to meet expectations. Patients and their families continue to face numerous basic hurdles. Consequently, the biggest challenge for the new hospital managers will be to streamline operations, enforce accountability, and ensure quality healthcare for all patients.
Clean-Up Operation: The Biggest Challenges Ahead
Fixing the deep-rooted structural issues at MGM Hospital will be an uphill battle. The incoming managers will have to immediately address several chronic grievances:
-
Staff Punctuality: Managing the erratic schedules of doctors and staff who frequently fail to report for duty on time.
-
Lack of Rounds: Ensuring physicians conduct mandatory and regular ward rounds during evening shifts.
-
Resource Shortages: Tackling the acute shortage of essential medicines and resolving recurrent water supply issues.
-
Infrastructure Breakdown: Repairing malfunctioning air conditioning systems across various wards and addressing constant cleanliness complaints.
-
Defunct Equipment: Revamping diagnostics, as several crucial pathology and radiology tests remain unavailable due to essential machines lying broken for prolonged periods.
What Does a Hospital Manager Actually Do?
A hospital manager serves as the core coordinator of a medical facility’s administrative framework. Their primary role is to establish seamless coordination among all departments, optimize resources, and guarantee timely, high-quality medical services.
They monitor the attendance of doctors, nurses, and paramedical staff, while overseeing ward management, sanitation, security, inventory of medicines, and equipment maintenance. Swiftly resolving patient grievances and reporting operational bottlenecks to the higher administration also fall under their direct purview.
High Stakes for Kolhan’s Largest Government Hospital
As the largest government hospital in the Kolhan division, MGM caters to a massive influx of patients not just from East Singhbhum, but also West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, and neighboring districts.
The community views this dual appointment as a significant step toward strengthening the hospital’s administrative backbone. However, all eyes are now on whether this new strategy will bring real, tangible change to the ground or simply remain a change on paper.
