Jamshedpur, May 27: Students from rural farming backgrounds have brought pride to East Singhbhum by securing top positions in the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) Class 10 board examinations. Shubham Kumar Patra and Bhumika Mishra, both students of Plus Two Adivasi High School in Bangurda, Patamda have topped East Singhbhum district and jointly secured the fifth position in the state with an impressive score of 97.40% — that is 487 out of 500 marks.

Their school, located in the remote Patamda block, has once again demonstrated academic excellence despite limited resources. This remarkable achievement places the school on the state’s educational map, showcasing the determination and talent of students from underprivileged and rural backgrounds.

Both Shubham and Bhumika hail from farming families. Shubham is the elder son of Kaushik Kumar Patra, a farmer from Shadangidih in the Kamalpur police station area. His uncle, Sanat Kumar Patra, serves as a contract teacher at the same school. Bhumika, on the other hand, is the youngest of three siblings and the daughter of farmer Hemant Kumar Mishra from Rakhdih village under the Kamalpur police station. She is also the niece of farmer Shrimant Kumar Mishra.

The school staff expressed immense pride and joy over their students’ achievements. Principal Sujit Kumar Seth and assistant teacher Pranakrishna Kumbhakar stated that after a three-year gap, their school has once again produced district toppers. They credited the success to the hard work of the students and the consistent guidance provided by the teaching staff.

Shubham and Bhumika have both expressed their desire to pursue engineering in the future, aiming to build careers in science and technology.

However, the overall performance of East Singhbhum district has seen a significant drop this year. From being ranked number one in the JAC Class 10 results in 2024, the district has slipped to the 16th position in 2025. Education officials have cited the lack of preparation reviews and inadequate monitoring as key reasons for this decline.

In contrast, Pakur district saw a dramatic improvement, climbing from the last position to second place. Manish Kumar, currently the Deputy Commissioner of Pakur, played a significant role in this turnaround. During his previous tenure as the Deputy Development Commissioner of East Singhbhum, he had closely monitored preparations for board examinations and implemented several strategic interventions that contributed to the district’s earlier success.

This year, similar planning appears to have been lacking, resulting in East Singhbhum’s disappointing performance. Nonetheless, individual success stories like those of Shubham and Bhumika continue to serve as shining examples of what determination and quality mentorship can achieve, regardless of background or circumstance.
