Jugsalai Girls High School student Pratima Gorai secures top 5 rank in East Singhbhum
Jamshedpur: From the narrow lanes of Jugsalai Basti has emerged a story that proves hard work and determination can overcome even the harshest of adversities. Pratima Gorai, the daughter of a roadside food vendor who sells ‘idli and dosa’, has made the entire city proud by scoring a phenomenal 96.6% in the Class 10 JAC Board Examination and securing a place among the top five scorers in the district in the Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) Class 10 examination. Scoring an impressive 96.6%, Pratima has proven that determination and hard work can overcome all odds.
Pratima’s father, Krishna Gorai, runs a modest food cart selling South Indian dishes. Her mother, Mukta Rani, is a homemaker. With limited financial resources and no luxuries, the family’s life revolves around survival and sacrifice. Yet in this struggle, Pratima carved her path to excellence with sheer perseverance.

A student of Jugsalai Girls High School, Pratima scored: 98 in Home Science, 98 in English, 94 in Mathematics, 97 in Science, 96 in Social Science and 90 in Hindi.
She dedicated 7–8 hours daily to her studies, undeterred by her modest background or distractions of teenage life.
Pratima’s mother recalls, “Her elder sister had scored 94% in matriculation. Since then, Pratima had made up her mind to do even better. She shut herself in her room and focused solely on her books.” Her determination was visible in her strict discipline and focused lifestyle.
Father Krishna Gorai, his eyes moist with pride, said, “I am busy with my cart all day. I don’t get much time for the kids, but I always tried my best to provide for their studies. Today, I feel that all our struggles were worth it.”
Though Pratima loves applying mehndi and doing sewing and embroidery, she put aside all her hobbies to focus on her studies. Her ultimate goal is to pursue Arts and become a teacher, a profession she feels passionate about. “I want to become a teacher so I can help others like me rise through education,” she says with a smile.
Pratima’s achievement is not just a personal milestone but a beacon of hope for countless students from economically weaker backgrounds. Her story proves that with courage, commitment, and the right attitude, it is possible to rise from the ground to touch the stars — even if you start from a humble street cart.
The teachers and administration at Jugsalai Girls High School, along with local residents, have celebrated her extraordinary performance. The school principal said, “Pratima is a bright student. Her dedication has made us all proud and set an example for others to follow.”
“Pratima Gorai’s story shows that dreams know no limits, and success doesn’t require privilege — only passion,” said a school teacher.
