Jamshedpur: In a decisive move to curb illegal mining activities and enforce stricter regulations, a high-level meeting was convened under the chairmanship of District Magistrate cum Deputy Commissioner Ananya Mittal. The meeting, conducted via video conferencing, focused on reviewing the operations and effectiveness of the newly established District Mining Task Force.
The comprehensive review covered several critical areas, including the operations of sand ghats, illegal excavation practices, unauthorized transportation, and brick kiln activities. The discussion also addressed the enforcement of mining regulations and the collection of royalties, as well as ensuring coordination with the forest department for effective monitoring and control.
Mittal emphasized the importance of rigorous enforcement to combat illegal mining. “The District Mining Task Force must carry out regular visits and conduct raids to address illegal mining activities in strict accordance with the National Green Tribunal (NGT) guidelines,” Mittal stated. He underscored the need for all officers to adhere to departmental provisions and maintain a vigilant roster for monitoring mining activities at sand ghats.
Specific instructions were given to the District Transport Officer and SDM to target vehicles operating without number plates and those involved in overloading. This directive aims to disrupt the illegal transportation of mined materials and ensure compliance with transport regulations.
The meeting also highlighted the critical need to prevent any loss of government revenue due to illegal mining and storage activities. Task Force members were instructed to issue challans and take appropriate actions against violators to safeguard the district’s financial interests.
Furthermore, the Pollution Board was directed to conduct thorough inspections of all brick kilns within the district and ensure the collection of 100% revenue from these operations for the current financial year. The board was also tasked with implementing environmental protection and pollution control measures to mitigate the impact of mining activities on the environment.
“The establishment of the District Mining Task Force recently represents a significant step toward addressing the challenges of illegal mining and ensuring that mining operations comply with legal and environmental standards. The District Magistrate’s directives reflect a strong commitment to enforcing regulations and protecting both the district’s resources and its revenue,” said an official.
