Break the silence: Session on menstrual hygiene at SNSVM

Ghatshila, March 16: ‘Break the silence,’ a session on menstrual hygiene for girls was organized in the multimedia hall of the Sant Nandlal Smriti Vidya Mandir (SNSVM). The session was designed to break the prevailing taboo centred on menstruation. Former MLA and Director and Social Activist of Namya Smile Foundation, Kunal Sarangi was present as chief guest at the session. 

The welcome address was delivered by SNSVM Administrative Officer, Dr Prasenjit Karmakar. The guests were felicitated with saplings and shawls.

teacher and member of Namya Smile Foundation, Dhwani Adesra, facilitated the session in which students were taught about menstrual hygiene through audio visual aids. Her presentation was titled ‘Johar Periods.’ Rishu Ranjan, another teacher of Namya Smile Foundation, conducted a question-and-answer session with the participants to break the myths  around menstruation.

The session was an eye opener for many. The girls learnt that they could perform all routine work during their menstrual periods. The students interacted with the speakers uninhibitedly. Dr. Bhogan Hembram, a reputed doctor from Ghatshila interacted with the students clearing their doubts.

 In his address on behalf of Namya Smile Foundation, Kunal Sarangi highlighted the need to break the taboo on menstrual hygiene. “People need to know that menstrual hygiene is a part of our general health cycle and should not be treated separately,” he observed.

 Each girl student was presented with a booklet titled ‘Maestrupedia Comic – The Friendly Guide’ to Periods.

Dr Prasenjit Karmakar presented a memento on behalf of the school to the team of Namya Smile Foundation.

Teacher Shaswati Roy Pattanaik proposed the vote of thanks. Anindita Dey anchored the programme.  The program was organized by a team SNSVM teachers including Gurdeep Kaur,   Bandana Chaurasia,  Sayoni Das,  Sujata Verma, Ritu Kumari and others.,Anup Kumar Pattanaik was the overall in-charge of the program.
