Jamshedpur: Yugantar Bharati has launched Jal Jagarukata Abhiyan on Sankranti day with the pledge to conserve river water.

The drive named as Swarnarekha Mahotsav is being organized since past years on joint initiatives of environment body Yugantar Bharati, MLA Saryu Roy and other environment conscious citizens of Steel City. The motto of the drive is to create public awareness to save Subarnarekha River from pollution.

Today the ceremony was kick-started at Domahuni river confluence. On the occasion the activists offered Puja and took pledge for protecting and conserving river waters. A seminar was also held on the spot after the drive was launched.

Chief guest on the occasion MLA Saryu Roy, a patron of Yugantar Bharati, said all ancient civilizations had developed along major rivers in the world. Yugantar Bharati carries out water conservation drive by holding Swarnrekha Mahotsav which culminates with Damodar Mahotsav. Series of seminars are organized and awareness drives are carried out during the campaign period, he said.

Today the whole world is grappling with the problem of river water pollution. Major rivers of Jharkhand including Damodar and Subarnarekha are also facing the brunt of increasing pollution of various natures. I think that to sort out this global problem steps ought to be taken at the local level.

Rivers are a boon to industries, but it is a pity that industries play the major role in polluting river waters by dumping effluents. With initiatives like cleaning river water it is also to be ensured that effluents are not dumped into the river. If we stop dumping effluents river waters would be automatically cleaned, Saryu Roy stated.

On the occasion MD of Jusco, Ashish Mathur said that people have distanced themselves from nature and as result of which rivers are being polluted.

Taking note of the fact Jusco has given a call of Responsible Citizens, Responsible City. Jusco has chalked out a project to treat waste waters of city for further consumption, Mathur said Present at seminar among others Dr Dinesh Mishra, expert in river water conservation, and environmentalist Dr KK Sharma.
