West Singhbhum: CRPF constable from Odisha killed in encounter with Maoists

Jamshedpur: Central Reserve Police Force ( CRPF) constable Sushant Kumar was killed in a fierce encounter between security forces and Maoists in the dense forests of West Singhbhum district on Friday. The encounter unfolded at Tonto Forest, a known Maoist stronghold, where security personnel cornered the notorious Maoist leader, Misir Besra, forcing him and his guerilla fighters to flee their fortified bunker.

During the intense exchange of fire, Constable Sushant Kumar sustained a bullet wound to his chest. Swiftly responding to the situation, he was airlifted to Medica Hospital in Ranchi for urgent medical attention. Tragically, despite the best efforts of the medical team, Constable Sushant succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering bravery and sacrifice. Hailing from the state of Odisha, Kumar served as an exemplary member of the CRPF 60 Battalion, dedicating his life to safeguarding the nation’s security.


The encounter, which unfolded with tactical precision, marked a significant step in the ongoing efforts to counter Maoist insurgency in the region. The security personnel successfully dismantled Misir Besra’s fortified bunker, compelling the Maoist leader and his guerilla companions to retreat from their strategic position. The valor displayed by Constable Sushant Kumar and his fellow officers in confronting this threat is a testament to their unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and stability.

Meanwhile, the wounded Havildar Munna continues to fight for his life. Sustaining bullet injuries to his leg, Havildar Munna’s condition remains critical. Both Sushant and Havildar Munna were airlifted to Medica Hospital in Ranchi, where they received immediate medical attention from a dedicated team of professionals. Constable Sushant’s injuries were unfortunately too severe to overcome, whereas Havildar Munna’s courageous battle against his injuries is still ongoing.

The encounter at Husipi village, under the jurisdiction of the Goilkera police station, further underlines the risks and challenges faced by security personnel in their relentless pursuit of upholding law and order. Two members of the CRPF 60 Battalion, Kumar and Havildar Munna, were injured in the crossfire. Constable Sushant sustained injuries to his leg, whereas Havildar Munna suffered critical bullet injuries to his chest, necessitating intensive medical intervention.
