The Defence Ministry signed Rs 53,866.50 crore contracts with GRSE and GSL for eight Next Generation Corvettes. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh attended the signing ceremony in New Delhi.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited will construct five corvettes. Goa Shipyard Limited will build the remaining three vessels under the project agreements.
The Indian Navy designed the warships indigenously for this landmark project. Defence Public Sector Undertakings secured the construction contracts through a competitive bidding process.
These advanced Corvettes will feature modern missiles, weapons, and sensor suites. The equipment will enable complete operations across air, surface, and sub-surface maritime domains.
The new warships will enhance Indian Navy capabilities in safeguarding critical maritime trade routes. They will conduct anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare operations effectively.
The vessels will also strengthen coastal defence while undertaking littoral combat operations. They will execute regular maritime presence and surveillance missions across key waters.
The decade-long project will generate about 72 lakh person-days of shipyard employment. Ancillary industries and MSMEs will gain an estimated 460 lakh person-days of work.
This initiative provides a major boost to the domestic shipbuilding ecosystem. It marks a significant step toward achieving self-reliance in Indian defence manufacturing.
The government previously cleared capital acquisition proposals worth Rs 2.12 lakh crore. Indian domestic industry will supply nearly 82 per cent of those defense procurements.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the Defence Acquisition Council during that approval. The council accorded Acceptance of Necessity for those major capital acquisition proposals.
