Firefighters successfully brought a blaze under control after flames erupted late Sunday night inside a multi-storey office building located behind the historic Writers’ Buildings in central Kolkata.
At least 10 fire engines rushed to the scene immediately after emergency teams received the initial alarm, according to official statements released on Monday morning.
The affected commercial structure, known as Lions Range, houses offices of multiple private companies and commercial entities.
Authorities confirmed that emergency responders reported no casualties or injuries during the overnight firefighting operations.
Locals first spotted flames and thick black smoke billowing from the upper floors of the commercial building late Sunday evening.
The eyewitnesses promptly alerted the local fire brigade, which mobilized multiple emergency units to contain the spreading fire.
The blaze caused widespread panic across the surrounding neighborhood due to its close proximity to the historic Writers’ Buildings.
The government landmark formerly served as the main West Bengal state secretariat and currently houses several vital administrative departments.
Fire brigade personnel successfully contained the blaze to prevent it from reaching nearby structures or expanding to adjacent floors.
Emergency crews are currently carrying out cooling operations in the fire-singed areas of the building to prevent secondary ignitions.
Officials stated that investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the fire or the circumstances leading to its rapid spread.
Fire department officials continue to inspect the site actively to determine the root cause of the blaze.
This incident follows another fire three days earlier in a storeroom of a gated apartment complex near South City Mall.
In that previous emergency, seven fire tenders responded swiftly and brought the flames under complete control without reported casualties.
