West Singhbhum boys monopolize Subroto Cup wins

Seraikela-Kharsawan girls dribble to cup victory

Jamshedpur, Aug 2: Team West Singhbhum has been crowned the winner of the Subroto Cup Football Tournament in U14 and U17 boys’ category. In the final match played at JRD Tata Sports Complex on Friday, West Singhbhum boys representing St. Xavier’s High School Lupunghutu thrashed host East Singhbhum 5-0 in the U14 final. Rashul Banra scored the first goal for the visitors in the 32nd minute after which there was no looking back as Pratap Honhaga scored twice in the 35th and 48th minute to put W Singhbhum 3-0 ahead. John Melgandi also netted one in the 56th minute as West Singhbhum had the last laugh.  The hosts East Singhbhum boys were representing JC High School, Ghatsila.

In the U17 boys final West Singhbhum beat Seraikela- Kharsawan 4-1 to be crowned the winner. Suraj Gaud opened the scoring for Seraikela-Kharsawan in the 17th minute but boys representing SS Plus 2 High School, Rajnagar failed to capitalize on the start as West Singhbhum’s Bamiya Samad scored three goals for his side in the 27th, 35th and 38th minute while Md. Aayan scored for West Singhbhum in the 32nd minute to make it 4-1 for boys representing Marwari Plus 2 High School, Chakradharpur.

Team Seraikela-Kharsawan was declared the winner in the U17 girls final played against West Singhbhum.  In a match decided by a tie-breaker, girls representing Kasturba Gandhi Residential Girls School, Kharsawan scored 3 goals during the penalty shoot out. Puja Sardar, Mamta Hembrom and Sushma Godsara scored a goal each. West Singhbhum girls represented Kasturba Gandhi Girls’ School, Tantnagar.     

Earlier, the concluding day of the divisional level Subroto Cup football tournament organised by tourism, art culture, sports and youth affairs department of Jharkhand under the aegis of East Singhbhum district administration, was inaugurated by JSA secretary and Sr. Manager, Sports, Tata Steel Sports Department Avinash Kumar on Friday.

Chief Guest during the prize distribution ceremony was East Singhbhum DC Ravi Shankar Shukla, guest of honour for the occasion were Ashish Kumar, Head, Sports, Tata Steel, Hassan Imam from Tata Steel Sports Department, Rajesh Kumar, Chief Administrator Tinplate Company, Uday Kumar from Tinplate Company, GB Singh, Manager, Sports, Tata Motors handed over the trophies, medals and certificates to the winners.    

Chief Guest DC Shukla congratulated the students and the organizing committee for hosting the event. District Sports Officer Manmohan Prasad also felicitated the winners. 

Total of nine teams from all the three districts of Kolhan participated in the U-14 boys and U-17 boys and girls’ category. Total of 150 players including 100 boys and 50 girls from hosts East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan, 18 coach/manager and 18 technical officers were part of the tourney.

To make the event successful, district sports officer Manmohan Prasad, Veer Pratap Murmu, Ajambar Singh Sardar, Wasifur Rahman, Nitin Kumar Sharma, Kamlesh Kumar Singh, SK Sharma and others provided full support.
