Jamshedpur, July 7: A severe water shortage has hit Matladih and surrounding areas in Bagbeda, Jamshedpur, leaving approximately 10,000 residents struggling for eight days. The crisis began when water supply from the Matladih pump house, situated near Edaljhopri along the Kharkai river, came to a halt due to unprecedented low water levels.

Local officials report that for the first time, the river’s water level has dropped below the intake well’s operational threshold, rendering the pump house unable to supply water to Matladih, Ranidih, Gansa Tola, Goltu Jhopri, Main Road, Sundsi Tola, Bagbeda Bazaar Tola, CP Tola, Jatajhopri, and other dependent settlements.

In response to the crisis, MLA Sanjeev Sardar has initiated water supply through tankers. However, residents are still forced to procure water from neighboring panchayats for essential daily needs.

Residents have expressed their distress over the situation. Menjo Sundi, a local resident, stated, “Daily life has been affected due to non-availability of water. We have to arrange for water first thing in the morning.” Another resident, Geeta Sundi, described life as “chaotic,” while Rashmi Devgam highlighted the dilemma between arranging water and attending work.

MLA Sanjeev Sardar assured that he is in contact with the Deputy Commissioner and the Water Supply Department to find a swift resolution. Meanwhile, Sunil Kisku, the local Mukhiya, explained that the water level in the intake well has dropped by approximately one and a half feet, and they are monitoring the situation closely.

The crisis underscores the vulnerability of water supply systems to environmental changes and the urgent need for sustainable water management solutions in the region. As residents continue to grapple with this acute shortage, local authorities are under pressure to provide both immediate relief and long-term solutions to prevent future crises.
