Jamshedpur, July 7: In a significant breakthrough, the Burmamines police have apprehended two members of a sophisticated bike theft gang operating across various areas of Jamshedpur. The arrests were announced by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishore Kaushal during a press conference at Burmamines police station on Sunday.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Satpal Singh, a resident of Kailash Nagar Burmamines, and Ankit Sonkar alias Chhotu, from Jugsalai Girl School Road. Following their arrest, police conducted raids based on information provided by the suspects, leading to the recovery of nine motorcycles and three scooters.

SSP Kaushal revealed that the gang’s modus operandi involved stealing bikes using master keys and then creating fake registration certificates (RCs) to mortgage the vehicles for profit. The police also seized fake RCs and master keys from the accused.

The arrests come in response to a recent spike in bike thefts in the Burmamines area. A special team led by the City SP, which included DSP City and DSP Headquarters-1, was formed to tackle the issue.

Some of the recovered vehicles were reportedly stolen from various locations over the past two to three months. Additionally, seven unclaimed bikes were recovered during the operation.

SSP Kaushal stated that raids are ongoing to apprehend other members of the gang who remain at large.

Present at the press conference were Rural SP Rishabh Garg, DSP City Sudhir Kumar, and officers from the Burmamines police station.

Complex Scheme Involving Fake Documents Uncovered

Jamshedpur, July 7: Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kishore Kaushal provided additional information about the gang’s modus operandi during a press briefing. The criminals employed a multi-step process to maximize their illicit gains.

As per SSP Kaushal, Satpal Singh, one of the arrested individuals, would steal bikes parked outside companies in Burmamines using a master key. The stolen vehicles were then handed over to Ankit Sonkar, who would change the number plates. Sonkar would create fake registration certificates (RCs) with arbitrary numbers for the stolen vehicles. The gang would then mortgage these vehicles, typically for amounts between 15,000 to 20,000 rupees, depending on the condition of the bike. The proceeds from the mortgages were divided among the gang members. SSP Kaushal emphasized that many of the recovered vehicles had altered number plates to avoid suspicion. This tactic allowed the gang to operate for an extended period without detection.

The investigation has revealed that the gang targeted a wide range of vehicles, including both motorcycles and scooters. The alteration of number plates and creation of fake RCs made it challenging for authorities to trace the stolen vehicles back to their rightful owners.

Jamshedpur, July 7: In addition to the stolen vehicles directly linked to the gang, the police recovered 7 unclaimed bikes during their raids. These unclaimed vehicles were found near HSM Gate, Diamond Restaurant, and Burmamines parking areas. All these unclaimed bikes have been kept at the Burmamines police station for further investigation.
