CII workshop focuses on practical low-carbon solutions
Time to Move from Intent to Action on Decarbonisation: Kundu
Jamshedpur, April 17: A focused workshop on industrial decarbonisation was organised in Jamshedpur today by the Confederation of Indian Industry, highlighting the growing importance of climate action and carbon management for businesses.
The workshop brought together industry leaders and experts to discuss regulatory requirements, global supply chain pressures, and changing market expectations. Participants were given a clear understanding of climate change from both global and Indian perspectives, along with the need for greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting.
Addressing the gathering, Saurabh Kundu, Convenor, CII Jharkhand Sustainability Panel & Chief Corporate Sustainability, Tata Steel, said that industrial decarbonisation is no longer a long-term goal but an immediate necessity. He noted that sustainability now plays a major role in influencing investments, partnerships, and market access. Referring to India’s net-zero target for 2070, he stressed the need for coordinated efforts across industries.

Kundu added that while industries show strong intent, the focus must now shift towards practical and scalable solutions. He also pointed out that in a state like Jharkhand, where coal-based and energy-intensive industries dominate, the transition to low-carbon systems must be balanced and inclusive.
The technical session was led by Shashi Kala Agrawal, Senior Counsellor, CII–Green Business Centre, who explained key aspects of GHG accounting, including Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions. She also spoke about emerging frameworks such as the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS).
Agrawal highlighted practical decarbonisation levers and emphasised the importance of developing structured, case study-backed net-zero roadmaps. These approaches, she noted, enable organisations to identify actionable pathways for reducing emissions and transitioning towards low-carbon operations.
Speaking on the occasion, Ranjot Singh, Past Chairman, CII Jharkhand State Council & Managing Director, Emdet Jamshedpur Pvt Ltd encouraged participants to adopt sustainability practices in their daily operations. He emphasized that sustainability should begin at the organisational level to ensure long-term growth and resilience.
