Jamtara: In a devastating incident near Bankhanjo Joria in the Palash forest, a herd of elephants claimed the lives of a grandfather and his six-year-old granddaughter on Monday at approximately 3:30 pm. The victims were identified as 55-year-old Zainul Ansari, a resident of Kuriyad village in the Ahilyapur police station area of Giridih district, and his granddaughter Nazish Khatoon.
The duo had traveled from their village to witness the elephants when the tragedy occurred. Reportedly, the granddaughter insisted on getting a closer look at the elephants, prompting her grandfather to carry her on his shoulders. Unfortunately, they found themselves amidst the elephant herd, and both were tragically crushed to death.
Rescue efforts were hampered by the absence of a well-equipped team to safely guide the elephant herd out of the district. The limited presence of forest department personnel proved insufficient to control the situation, leading to the unfortunate incident.
Jamtara MLA Dr. Irfan Ansari expressed deep concern upon reaching the scene later in the evening. Ranger Ramchandra Paswan of Jamtara Forest Division revealed that a herd of 25 to 30 elephants had been camping around the Palash forest. Presently seeking refuge in Chhatabad village on the border of Jamtara district, the herd had also caused damage to the agricultural fields in Bankhanjo village of Narayanpur police station area by trampling over the paddy crops.
This tragic event highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts to manage human-elephant interactions in the region, ensuring the safety of both residents and wildlife. Authorities are urged to enhance preventive measures and deploy resources to mitigate such incidents in the future.
