Madhubani: A devastating incident unfolded on NH-57 in the Phulparas police station area of Madhubani, Bihar, as the car of Madhepura District Magistrate (DM) Vijay Prakash Meena crushed five people, resulting in the tragic loss of three lives. The victims included a laborer, a woman, and a child who died on the spot, while two others sustained critical injuries. The injured were promptly transported to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently in critical condition.
The incident occurred around 8 in the morning when DM Vijay Prakash Meena’s car was en route to Madhepura. A technical fault in the vehicle led to a loss of control, causing it to collide with five laborers working on the roadside. The fatalities have been identified as Guriya Devi (27), her 7-year-old daughter, and Ashok Singh.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene following the accident, triggering an outburst of anger among the local residents. Enraged by the situation, people damaged the DM’s car, blocked NH-57, and demanded the arrest of the responsible party along with compensation for the victims’ families.
Law enforcement swiftly intervened, calming the agitated crowd, securing the bodies for post-mortem, and deploying a significant police presence at the site. Contrary to initial reports, the DM was reportedly not present in the vehicle at the time of the accident, as per the District Public Relations Officer (DPRO). However, eyewitness accounts conflict, suggesting the presence of the DM, the driver, a bodyguard, and a girl in the car. It’s reported that they were swiftly evacuated from the scene by a motorbike after the collision.
The tragic incident has left the community in grief, with authorities working to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident and address the demands of the affected locals.
