Jamshedpur, Jan 20: The issue of ticket touting and black marketing in Indian Railways has long plagued the ticketing system, especially during peak travel times, depriving legitimate passengers of fair access to tickets. To combat this, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) has developed and implemented a robust strategy, combining traditional law enforcement with cutting-edge technology, to ensure fairness and transparency in railway services.

RPF’s proactive approach includes regular raids and crackdowns on ticket touting operations. The RPF’s Cyber cells actively monitor booking patterns, identifying irregularities and launching pinpointed operations targeting unauthorized ticket counters and cybercafés. These efforts have resulted in the seizure of countless illegal tickets and the arrest of numerous touts, disrupting their operations. In addition to physical raids, the RPF has strengthened its monitoring systems through digital surveillance, utilizing advanced tools to keep a close watch on online booking platforms. By tracking bulk bookings and suspicious transactions, the RPF can detect and prevent black marketing before it escalates. CCTV surveillance at ticket counters further enhances the RPF’s ability to monitor suspicious activities.

In a bid to tackle online touting, the RPF works in close collaboration with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). This partnership has led to the identification and deactivation of suspicious user and agent accounts, ensuring a more secure ticketing system for all passengers. The RPF has also launched awareness campaigns, educating the public on the importance of booking tickets through authorized channels and encouraging them to report any illegal activities they encounter. “It is crucial that passengers remain vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour to help maintain a fair system,” said an RPF spokesperson.

Further strengthening its fight against touting, the RPF has integrated advanced technology into its operations. Its Cyber cells are equipped with the latest software to track and dismantle ticketing syndicates, enabling the force to counter increasingly sophisticated networks. The legal consequences for those involved in ticket touting are severe, with offenders facing heavy penalties, including imprisonment. Recent judicial rulings have underscored the severity of the issue, classifying ticket touting as a “social crime.”

The results of these initiatives have been significant. The RPF has dismantled numerous high-profile touting syndicates, apprehended thousands of offenders and seized large quantities of illegal tickets, curbing widespread black marketing and restoring public trust in the railway system. Moving forward, the RPF plans to further enhance its efforts by incorporating advanced AI and machine learning technologies to analyse booking behaviours and detect suspicious activities in real-time. Additionally, the use of biometric verification, including facial recognition and fingerprint scanning, is expected to enhance the authenticity of ticket transactions and prevent fraudulent bookings.

With the continued integration of cloud computing, big data analytics and predictive analysis, the RPF aims to stay ahead of emerging threats and further minimize the impact of touting. “We are committed to leveraging technology to make the railway system safer, fairer and more accessible to all passengers,” the RPF representative concluded. Through these ongoing efforts, the Railway Protection Force is playing a vital role in maintaining a transparent and secure railway system, ensuring that passengers can travel with confidence and fairness.
