Tata Steel Sports Department cadets excel

Jamshedpur: The performance of the cadets of Training Centres of Tata Steel Sports Department has been outstanding during different sporting events held recently.

The cadets from boxing, karate, basketball and chess training centres have exceled during the Jharkhand State championships and brought laurels for the respective centres and the Sports Department.

In Basketball, the women and men teams won the runner up and 2nd runners up trophies at the Jharkhand State Championship held at Jamshedpur from December 23-25, 2018 while six trainees of the Roll Ball training centre represented Jharkhand State in the 64th SGFI Roll ball championship held at Bilaspur between December 26-29, 2018 in which the Jharkhand team won the silver medal.

Trainees of Tata Steel Boxing Centre also participated in 12th State Boxing Championship held at Noamundi between December 26-29, 2018 in various categories including elite men & women, youth men, junior men, sub junior boys and girls. The Tata Boxing Centre team won the championship in Elite Men and Youth Men categories while the Tata Boxing Centre team was Runners-up in Elite Women and Junior Men categories. Suraj Soy was adjudged Best Boxer in the Elite Men category.

In individual performances, Gold Medal winners in Elite Men category were Ujjwal Sharma, Suraj Soy, Abhishek Kumar, Manthan Singh, Vikash Tiwary, Bhaskar Hansda and Abhishek Kumar Singh in respective weight categories. Besides, 19 more Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were won by the cadets of the Centre in Youth Men, Elite Women, Junior Boys and Sub Junior Boys categories.

During another indoor sporting event, the Jharkhand State Open Chess Championship 2018 held at JRD Tata Sports Complex during December 28-30, 2018, a total of 10 medals (Two gold, three silver and five bronze) were won by Tata Steel cadets.

Meanwhile, the Karate Training Centre cadets participated in 7th Jharkhand State Karate Championship on December 29-30, 2018 held at Jamshedpur. The cadets won four gold, two silver and five bronze medals. Puja Rani got the Best Karatika award and was given a Cash Award of Rs. 5,000/- and a Trophy.

The Sports Department has congratulated the cadets on their performance and has wished them well in their future endeavours also.
