National Mountain Climbing Day is celebrated in the United States to honour and commemorate the first successful ascent of the Grand Teton in Wyoming, which took place on August 1, 1898 and also to honour mountaineers Bobby Matthews and his friend Josh Madigan who successfully scaled all 46 of the Adirondack Mountains in New York.
