Tata Motors Jamshedpur trains first all-girls tribal batch in motor mechanics

Jamshedpur, July 14: Marking a significant milestone on World Youth Skills Day, Tata Motors has announced the successful training and certification of the first All-Girls Batch of tribal youth in motor mechanics under its flagship Kaushalya Programme in Jharkhand.

The pioneering batch comprises 13 young women mobilised from three gram panchayats in Chandil, Jamshedpur, and Potka. These girls have completed the Mechanical Motor Vehicle (MMV) training module—an intensive skill-building programme aimed at enhancing employability in underserved communities. Their training involved 50 days of classroom instruction focused on Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle components, followed by a year-long On-the-Job Training (OJT) at authorised service stations and dealerships. The trainees were provided with uniforms, safety gear, accommodation, and a monthly stipend to support their learning journey.

Most of the participants came from economically challenged backgrounds and had previously dropped out of school. Entering the traditionally male-dominated field of automotive servicing posed social and cultural challenges. Tata Motors, in collaboration with its community wing, Vikas Samities, addressed these issues through proactive community engagement, family counselling sessions, and support from local educators and leaders.

Vinod Kulkarni, Head of CSR at Tata Motors, stated, “The launch of the All-Girls Batch is a conscious move to empower young women from tribal communities to step into a field historically dominated by men. Through a safe and supportive environment, we’ve enabled these girls to realise their potential and pursue meaningful careers.”

The initiative not only aims to break gender stereotypes but also underscores the transformative power of inclusive skill development. Tata Motors’ Kaushalya Programme continues to play a vital role in creating equitable opportunities for youth across rural India.
