Jamshedpur: Facing a wave of public resentment, Jugsalai Municipal Council Chairperson Nausheen Khan has signalled her intent to petition against the Jharkhand government’s decision to implement a 20% increase in holding taxes. The move follows a high-pressure meeting on Tuesday with the Jugsalai Municipal Council Rent Payers Association, who have labeled the hike “dictatorial.”
“Anti-People” Burden on Middle Class
A delegation led by Association President Sardar Shailendra Singh met Khan at her residential office to voice their grievances. The agitators argued that the government imposed the 20% surge without consulting local representatives or the public.
The Association highlighted several critical concerns:
-
Financial Strain: The sudden tax burden could be devastating for middle-class families.
-
Impact on Trade: Small-scale traders, already struggling with inflation, fear the hike will cripple local commerce.
-
Lack of Consultation: Protesters criticized the unilateral nature of the implementation.
Council Leadership Stands in Solidarity
Chairperson Nausheen Khan confirmed she will send a formal letter to the state government urging an immediate reconsideration of the policy. She is joined by Vice Chairperson Archana Dubey and several councilors who have already petitioned the Deputy Commissioner for legal intervention to halt the tax implementation.
Warning of Market Shutdown
The Rent Payers Association has issued a stern ultimatum: if the government does not withdraw or significantly reduce the hike, they will enforce a complete shutdown of the Jugsalai market.
To escalate the matter, the leadership outlined a multi-pronged strategy:
-
Political Pressure: Submitting formal complaints to Chief Minister Hemant Soren and the Urban Development Minister.
-
Legal Action: Consulting legal experts to file a writ petition in the Jharkhand High Court.
-
Legislative Lobbying: Engaging local MLAs to gain legislative backing against the increased tax burden.
