Babulal Marandi Demands NIA Probe into Police-Criminal Nexus in Dhanbad

Dhanbad (IANS): Jharkhand Leader of the Opposition and former Chief Minister Babulal Marandi criticized the Hemant Soren-led government on Tuesday, asserting that law and order has completely broken down in the state. Speaking at a press conference in Dhanbad alongside MP Dhullu Mahato, Marandi accused the administration of actively shielding criminals and mafias.

Allegations of a “Deliberate” Criminal Nexus

Marandi characterized the deteriorating safety situation as a “deliberate strategy” rather than an accidental failure. He claimed that a dangerous nexus between criminals, terrorists, and the police has forced traders and ordinary citizens to live in a state of constant fear.

“How can one expect better law and order when the government posts tainted officers in key districts and important positions?” Marandi questioned. He further alleged that a “battle for supremacy” currently rages between uniformed and non-uniformed criminals while the state remains a silent spectator.

Call for NIA Investigation

The BJP leader demanded a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), citing threats to international and inter-state security. His key allegations included:

  • International Arms Links: Marandi claimed that illegal weapons are reaching Dhanbad from Pakistan via Punjab.
  • Gangster Protection: He alleged that the government provided protection and an arms license to Rahul Singh, an accused associate of gangster Prince Khan.
  • State Incapacity: He insisted that tackling this international nexus sits beyond the capacity of the state government.

Corruption and Administrative Credibility

Marandi also raised concerns regarding corruption and institutional erosion:

  • Liquor Scam: He alleged that 17-18 accused individuals secured default bail because the police “negligently” failed to file charge sheets on time.
  • Controversial Appointments: He questioned the appointments of the ACB Chief and the DGP, accusing the government of granting illegal service extensions to favored, controversial officers.
  • Government Silence: Marandi noted that despite his multiple letters to Chief Minister Hemant Soren regarding these issues, the government has chosen silence over accountability.
