Love behind bars: former Naxal commanders begin new chapter in Jharkhand jail

In a remarkable turn of events showcasing rehabilitation over retribution, two former Naxalite commanders who surrendered to join the mainstream tied the knot at Hazaribagh Open Jail on Wednesday.
The wedding of Suresh Singh Munda and Somwari Hembram was organised as a humanitarian initiative by the Hazaribagh police and district administration to help the couple start a new chapter in their lives.
Suresh, a resident of Baruhatu in Ranchi’s Bundu area, and Somwari, who hails from Arahanga in Tamar, were both active in extremist outfits before abandoning the path of violence.
Attracted by the state government’s surrender and rehabilitation policy, the duo laid down their arms and were serving their sentences at the open jail while undergoing social reintegration.
To ensure the couple did not feel the absence of their families on their special day, senior police personnel and district officials stepped into the roles of both the bride’s and groom’s relatives, welcoming them with traditional customs and presenting them with wedding gifts.
Adding legal validity to the socio-cultural ceremony, Hazaribagh District Marriage Officer Rajesh Ekka completed the marriage registration directly at the venue, officially granting the couple legal recognition as husband and wife.
This unique event underlines the broader impact of Jharkhand’s rehabilitation framework for former extremists. Beyond security operations and law enforcement, the initiative demonstrates that successfully reintegrating former Naxalites requires holistic support, including social acceptance, legal stability, and opportunities to build a normal family life.
