Tata Power, BPCL join hands for Rs250 cr Mumbai refinery project

Tata Power has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to develop a 110 kV power infrastructure for BPCL’s Petro Resid Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Unit project at its Mumbai Refinery.
The strategic project, requiring 90 MW of power, marks the first of its kind being executed in India’s refining sector and serves as a major milestone in BPCL’s drive toward petrochemical diversification and higher-value product recovery.
With an estimated project outlay of approximately ₹14,203 crore and a processing capacity of 3 million metric tonnes per annum, the PRFCCU initiative stands as BPCL’s second-largest ongoing project and the biggest ever undertaken at the Mumbai Refinery. By boosting domestic value addition, the facility is expected to strengthen national energy security while advancing the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
Under the agreed terms, Tata Power will design and develop the necessary high-voltage connectivity and associated transmission assets over a 24-month timeline.
The combined estimated investment for the power infrastructure stands at roughly ₹250 crore between both companies, subject to required approvals and execution milestones.
Beyond catering to BPCL’s immediate operational requirements, this network expansion will reinforce Tata Power’s transmission grid in the Trombay industrial zone, catering to growing power demand from surrounding large-scale commercial facilities.
Aligning with long-term infrastructure goals for the region, Tata Power further intends to establish a 400 kV transmission facility at Trombay over the next five years.
This grid augmentation will significantly elevate power evacuation capabilities, securing reliable electricity for Mumbai’s commercial and industrial ecosystem while supporting sustainable regional economic growth.
