The Jalalabad police have arrested three individuals, including a woman, and recovered 964 grams of opium from their possession during a routine security check on Mirzapur Road.
The suspects had traveled from Jharkhand to deliver the contraband for local distribution.
According to police officials, the arrests were made after officers conducting vehicle checks noticed three individuals riding a motorcycle who attempted to quickly turn around and flee upon spotting the police team. Police personnel pursued the suspects and apprehended them on the spot.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Jilwa Bibi, a resident of Latehar district in Jharkhand, her nephew Hussain Ansari, and 70-year-old Chhavinath, a resident of Kardola village in Jalalabad.
Investigation revealed that Jilwa Bibi’s husband, Kabir Ansari, and their son, Mushtaq, had a long-standing business relationship with Chhavinath in drug trafficking. With both her husband and son currently incarcerated for opium sales, Jilwa Bibi teamed up with her nephew to continue the illicit trade.
Police stated that Jilwa Bibi and Hussain procured the opium at a low price in Jharkhand and brought it to Jalalabad to hand over to Chhavinath. The plan was for Chhavinath to sell the drug to passing truck drivers at inflated rates, after which the trio would split the proceeds among themselves. Despite his advanced age, Chhavinath was actively participating in the distribution network.
The Jalalabad police have registered a formal FIR against all three accused under relevant provisions, and further investigation into the supply chain is underway.
