Ranchi / Jamshedpur, Oct 30: In a tragic road accident on Thursday morning, four people lost their lives and more than 20 sustained injuries after a speeding pickup van overturned near the Bundu toll plaza on the Ranchi–Jamshedpur National Highway (NH-33).
According to eyewitnesses, the pickup van—reportedly carrying passengers far beyond its permitted capacity—was heading toward Ranchi at a high speed when the driver lost control while negotiating a turn near the Bundu toll gate.
The vehicle skidded off balance and flipped over multiple times before coming to a halt in the middle of the road.
The sudden crash caused panic and chaos as several passengers were trapped beneath the overturned vehicle.
Local villagers and commuters immediately rushed to the spot to assist in rescue efforts.
They helped pull the injured from the wreckage and arranged for their transportation to nearby health centers before police teams arrived.
Soon after, a police and administrative team from Bundu police station reached the spot to take control of the situation.
The bodies of the deceased were sent for post-mortem examinations, while the injured were referred to RIMS Ranchi and other hospitals for advanced medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that reckless driving and overloading were the primary causes of the accident.
Officials are verifying the vehicle’s registration details and ownership, while the driver, who is believed to have fled the scene, is being traced.
Traffic movement on the busy NH-33 remained disrupted for over an hour due to the accident but was later restored after the vehicle was removed with the help of a crane.
Local residents have once again raised concerns over the growing number of accidents on this stretch of the highway, blaming poor road discipline, over-speeding, and a lack of strict enforcement of transport safety norms.
Police have urged commuters and transport operators to strictly adhere to road safety rules to prevent such recurring tragedies.
