India Successfully Tests Advanced Agni Missile with MIRV Technology

New Delhi (IANS): India achieved a significant breakthrough in its strategic defence capabilities on Friday, successfully flight-testing an advanced Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targeted Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. The test, conducted over the Indian Ocean Region, demonstrates India’s ability to strike multiple targets across a vast area using a single missile system.

Precision Across the Indian Ocean

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted the trial from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Island off the coast of Odisha. During the flight, the missile deployed multiple payloads, each successfully hitting spatially distributed targets.

Ground-based and ship-based tracking stations monitored the entire trajectory—from lift-off to the final impact of all warheads. Official flight data confirmed that the mission met all strategic objectives, proving the reliability of India’s indigenous MIRV systems.

Strengthening National Security

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the DRDO, the Indian Army, and industrial partners on the achievement. He noted that the MIRV capability adds “an incredible layer” to the country’s defence preparedness in the face of evolving global threat perceptions.

The Agni project is a collaborative effort between various DRDO laboratories and several private and public Indian industries, highlighting a robust domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.

Maiden Test of ‘TARA’ Glide Weapon

The Agni test followed another major defence milestone on Thursday: the maiden flight trial of the Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) weapon.

  • The Technology: TARA is a modular range-extension kit—India’s first indigenous glide weapon system—that converts standard unguided warheads into high-precision guided munitions.
  • Cost-Effective Defense: Developed by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad, TARA utilizes low-cost, state-of-the-art systems to neutralize ground-based targets with extreme accuracy.
  • Production Status: DRDO’s Development cum Production Partners (DcPP) have already commenced the manufacturing of these kits to bolster the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) tactical arsenal.
