Smog covers creating respiratory problems around Tatanagar station areas

Jamshedpur, Nov 8: Smog engulfs areas and localities around Tatanagar station once evening sets in. The reason may not be far to look but controlling them could turn out to be a superhuman task especially when segments of irresponsible denizens care two hoots for civilian and civilized concerns. Garbage piles litter places just outside the railway station; the vehicle parking stand opposite the Tatanagar Railway Station building, the busy road adjacent to the station boundary wall, the Central School annex, Sanjay Nagar, Railway Colony and other localities around the station are viable locations where garbage piles litter the scenes.

With winter making its presence felt, these piles are lit and people sit around them in clusters or groups to warm themselves oblivious to the fact that they are polluting the air that humans and lower animals of their genre breathe. They are, perhaps, unaware of the fact that they are contributing to the deadly smog cover permeating the atmosphere in the Tatanagar station area. People have already latched on to respiratory problems because of the air pollution. Visibility turns low as evening sets in and pile after garbage pile is ignited by ‘warmth seekers who find comfort in others’ woes.’ Wayfarers including vehicle drivers are the worst sufferers at such inconvenient phases while negotiating the roads that are mostly like hole-riddled carpets with stray animals and people hurrying on towards their respective destinations adding to the risky and eye-squinting smog layered threats.

The cold atmosphere prevents smoke from rising higher due to which it tends to hang low and create a wide-spreading umbrella of health-scare. People are steadily developing breathing problems and if such conditions persist, the queues in hospitals, nursing homes and medicinal outlets are bound to grow. This smog affects more than 5,000 residents of Sanjay Nagar and Railway Colony. Residents also experience burning in their eyes when garbage piles are set on fire in the evening. Relief comes with the approach of morning but once the sun dips over the western horizon, the garbage piles that grow faster than bedbugs’ ‘breeding abilities’ are set on fire to spread winter warmth and atmospheric pollution.

Gajraj Singh Charan, senior DCM of Chakradharpur Railway Division, said, “Garbage should only be disposed at designated places. If this is not happening then it will be investigated and further action will be taken. If pollution control standards are not being followed, strict action will be taken.”

If the DCM’s heeding is taken seriously, there is a chance that people will breathe easier.
