Jamshedpur, June 24: Singhbhum district in Jharkhand, which is approximately 300 kilometers from the beach in Puri, Odisha, has been revealed to be the location of the world’s first beach, dating back to around 3.2 billion years.

Recent research published by the National Academy of Sciences of America has overturned previous findings that suggested continents formed 2.5 billion years ago. The latest study by scientists from India, Australia, and South Africa provides solid evidence that Singhbhum was home to the earliest beach on Earth.

Lead researcher Priyadarshi Chaudhary from Monash University, Australia, along with his team, analyzed zircon particles from 3.1 billion-year-old rocks in Singhbhum. Their findings indicate the presence of ancient rivers and seas, suggesting that continents existed in Jharkhand much earlier than previously believed.

The research supports the theory that the Singhbhum Craton, a stable and ancient part of the Earth’s crust, emerged from the sea about 3.2 billion years ago. Cratons, which are the initial cores of large landmasses, formed the foundations of modern continents. Similar cratons have also been found in South Africa and Australia.

While there is ongoing debate about the role of magma in the formation of continents, scientists widely agree that plate tectonics caused the continents to rise above the sea about 2.5 billion years ago. This new evidence places the emergence of the Singhbhum Craton significantly earlier, marking it as a crucial site in understanding the Earth’s geological history.
