Jamshedpur, Aug 11: A state-of-the-art coaching depot is set to come up at Tatanagar Railway Station, with an estimated investment of Rs 400 crore. The proposed facility will cater to the increasing number of Vande Bharat Express trains operating from the station and will include three washing lines and five stabling lines for train maintenance and parking.
The South Eastern Railway has already submitted the proposal to the Railway Board, which has received in-principle approval from General Manager Anil Kumar Mishra. The coaching depot is planned to be developed in the Loco Colony area, which currently houses 200 railway quarters. These quarters are slated for demolition to make space for the new infrastructure.
An official from the Engineering Department confirmed, “A modern coaching depot is essential to support the growing operations of Vande Bharat trains. The proposal includes modern washing and stabling lines in line with current railway requirements.”
The move follows an inspection by Chakradharpur Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Tarun Huriya about a month ago. Post-inspection, he directed officials to dismantle the aging quarters and expedite the depot planning. With Tatanagar already handling Vande Bharat Express services to Patna and Brahmapur and new routes to Bilaspur, Puri and Banaras in the pipeline, the demand for upgraded maintenance facilities has intensified.
As part of the broader redevelopment of Tatanagar Station, the old washing line will also be dismantled and replaced. The upcoming depot is expected to improve turnaround time, ensure better upkeep of premium trains and support future service expansion. The proposal now awaits final approval from the Railway Board before work can commence.
