Jamshedpur: In a major step towards modernising the power distribution system, Jharkhand Bijli Vitran Nigam Limited (JBVNL) has accelerated the rollout of smart meters across Jharkhand, with Jamshedpur emerging as a key focus area. The initiative aims to enhance consumer convenience, ensure billing accuracy, and bring greater transparency to electricity usage.
The move is set to eliminate long-standing issues associated with manual meter readings, including human errors and delays. With the new digital system in place, consumers will no longer have to wait for meter readers, as their electricity usage will be recorded and transmitted automatically.
Real-time monitoring to curb wastage
An official of JBVNL stated that the smart meters are equipped with advanced technology that directly sends consumption data to a central server. One of the most impactful features is real-time monitoring through a mobile application, enabling households to track their electricity usage instantly.
This feature is expected to promote energy efficiency, as consumers can identify high-consumption appliances and adjust their usage accordingly. The meters are available in both prepaid and postpaid formats, giving users flexibility in managing their electricity expenses.
Special 3 percent discount for prepaid users
To encourage adoption, JBVNL is offering a 3 percent discount to consumers opting for the prepaid model. Similar to mobile recharges, users can pay in advance and avoid the inconvenience of standing in long queues for bill payments. The prepaid system also helps households better manage their monthly budgets.
Key features ensure transparency and convenience
The smart meters come with a host of consumer-friendly features. Bills will be generated with high accuracy and delivered via WhatsApp and SMS at the end of each month. The meters also include an inbuilt net metering facility, allowing seamless integration with solar power systems without requiring meter replacement.
Additionally, consumers will receive timely alerts about low balances or pending payments, ensuring uninterrupted service. The system effectively eliminates the possibility of tampering or discrepancies, making the billing process fully transparent.
Helplines issued for assistance
To support consumers during the transition, JBVNL has issued toll-free helpline numbers—1912 and 1800-345-6570—for technical assistance and grievance redressal.
Officials believe that the smart meter initiative will play a crucial role in curbing electricity theft while ensuring 24×7 reliable and high-quality power supply. As Jamshedpur embraces this digital transformation, the city moves a step closer to becoming a model for efficient and consumer-friendly power management in the state.
