Rising ear ailments in winter: MGM Jamshedpur reports 25% surge in cases

Jamshedpur: The harsh winter has triggered an alarming rise in ear-related ailments, with Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) Medical College reporting a 25% increase in such cases. ENT specialists warn that common cold and cough during this season can lead to severe ear problems if left untreated.

Bablu Singh, a 41-year-old resident of Sonari, recently experienced sudden hearing loss and sought medical attention at MGM’s ENT department. Doctors diagnosed him with a ruptured eardrum caused by complications linked to cold-related congestion. Similarly, 14-year-old Amit Sao from Dimna Road reported a whistling sound in his ears whenever he cleared his nose. Upon examination, it was revealed that his condition stemmed from pressure exerted on the inner ear due to blocked sinuses.

Dr. Rohit Jha, an ENT specialist at MGM, explained that congestion caused by cold and cough often blocks the Eustachian tube, increasing pressure in the inner ear and leading to serious conditions such as tinnitus, ruptured eardrums and nerve disturbances. He said, “We are seeing more than a dozen such cases daily. Forcefully clearing the nose can worsen the situation by applying undue pressure on the inner ear structures.”

Patients commonly report symptoms such as ear pain, discharge, hearing loss, dizziness, tingling sensations and fatigue. Children are particularly vulnerable to these conditions due to their narrower Eustachian tubes. Dr. Jha emphasized that ignoring unusual sounds or sensations in the ears can result in long-term damage.

To minimize risks during the winter season, experts recommend wearing warm clothing, including gloves, socks and mufflers and using caps or scarves to protect the head and neck. Taking warm baths and consuming hot beverages like ginger or Tulsi tea can also provide relief and protection.

With temperatures in Jamshedpur dipping to 8°C, the number of cold-related illnesses is steadily rising.
