Jamshedpur, Feb 18: Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant is reportedly considering a significant change that may result in the prohibition of two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles owned by employees from entering the plant premises. While this idea had been explored previously, the exercise was temporarily halted upon the union’s request. However, there is renewed effort to assess the feasibility of restricting vehicle entry, with safety being the primary concern.
Given the extensive work carried out within Tata Steel’s Jamshedpur plant and the high volume of vehicle movement, the company is keen on preventing accidents and ensuring employee safety. One possible solution under consideration is to introduce a bus service akin to Tata Motors, allowing employees to park their vehicles outside the Tata Steel premises and commute inside by bus. While these options are being contemplated, the management has refrained from providing official information on the matter.
Additionally, the company is evaluating the possibility of implementing changes to make movement within the Tata Steel Jamshedpur plant more convenient. To oversee this initiative, TV Narendran, MD cum CEO of Tata Steel, has formed a committee. Probal Ghosh, Vice President Shared Services, has been appointed as the chairperson, and Ashish Aggarwal, Head Construction Civil and Structural, is the coordinator.
The committee includes members such as MD PEO Debashish Chaudhary, Chief Environment Management Amit Ranjan Chakraborty, Chief Coke Ovens Jayant Sinha Arvind Nath Rai, Head Engineering Services Jaykat Sinha, Chief Spare Kalyan Prasad, GM Design Manish Kumar Singh, Chief HRBP Steel Mukesh Aggarwal, Chief Corporate Services Pranay Sinha, Chief Procurement Rajat Madhur, Head Engineering Rajeev Kumar Sharma, and Chief Thin Slab Caster Ranjay Kumar Singh. Their focus will be on reducing crowding within the Tata Steel campus and improving the arrangements for the new office. (w/nm)
Controversy over vehicle entry ban
Jamshedpur, Feb 18: The potential ban on the entry of two-wheelers and four-wheelers at Tata Steel has triggered a heated debate, with protests intensifying against the elected president of Tata Workers Union, Sanjeev Choudhary Tunnu. Arvind Pandey, former Deputy President of Tata Workers Union, has publicly opposed Choudhary’s leadership, emphasizing that the decision to elect him unopposed should not translate into anti-employee measures.
Pandey expressed concern that a ban on vehicle entry might adversely affect employees, and called on the union president to take proactive steps to prevent such decisions. He urged for attention to be directed towards the potential hardships employees may face due to this decision. Pandey warned that if the union fails to address the issue, opposition from both the union president and other members could arise.
As of now, there has been no official circular or statement issued by the management regarding the speculated ban on vehicle entry. The controversy surrounding this issue remains unresolved, with discussions and negotiations likely to continue between the union and the management.
