Police arrest five criminals, foil extortion bid

Ranchi: City police here arrested five persons in separate cases of extortion and criminal conspiracy on Friday.

Two of the accused, identified as Radhakrishna Pati alias Charlie, a resident of Barbil, Orissa, and Karan Nayak, resident of Gumla, Basia, were nabbed with two country-made arms, bullets and Rs 53,000 in cash. Cops also seized a car and four mobile phones from the possession of the two.

The senior superintendent of police (SSP) of Ranchi, Prabhat Kumar said the accused persons belong to the Anil Singh gang.

�The accused persons were arrested near Argora Chowk. We had got a tip-off that they were planning to extort a reputed contractor of the state Capital. A team was set up to crack down on the gangsters. They were caught waiting for the victim near Argora Chowk,� said the SSP.

Police suspect the gang had extorted many city businessmen and traders and that it was planning extort many more in the city.

In another breakthrough, city police arrested three youths and confiscated arms from their possession. The accused persons, identified as Ravi Kumar Ram, Chhotu Lohra and Arjun Ram were planning to carry out robbery in the house of a reputed doctor in the city. Cops also seized a motorcycle from the possession of the accused persons.

�We are interrogating the accused persons to find out names of their associates. We found one of them in a restaurant. No arms was found from his possession,� said the SSP.
