Jamshedpur, April 15: In a tragic incident, a vendor employee associated with Tata Steel, Gorachand Mahto, allegedly died by self-immolation at his quarters near Dhuni Road under the Sidhgora police station area on Tuesday night.
According to initial reports, Mahto had been struggling for a prolonged period to secure the payment of his provident fund (PF) dues. Despite repeated efforts, the amount remained unpaid, pushing him into severe financial distress. The mounting economic hardship reportedly took a toll on his mental well-being, ultimately leading him to take the extreme step.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information, took custody of the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination. A suicide note recovered from the scene reportedly mentions the delay in PF payment and the mental agony he endured.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents and labour organisations, who have raised serious questions over the social security and welfare of workers employed under vendor companies.
Police have initiated an investigation and stated that strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
