Jamshedpur, Oct 31: Beneficiaries of the Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY) in Jamshedpur will soon have a roof over their heads, as 644 ready-to-occupy flats in Birsanagar are set to be handed over in the new year.
The Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) has intensified efforts to make the housing campus livable before the official handover.
According to officials, nearly 1.5 Km of internal road construction work has already been approved by the Road Construction Department.
The department has finalized the project estimate and will soon issue tenders.
Once the process is completed, the construction work will commence on a war footing to ensure completion by the end of December.
Simultaneously, the electricity department is also gearing up to provide power connections to the 644 flats.
Eight 500 KVA transformers will be installed in each block to ensure uninterrupted power supply.
Water facilities are also being prepared, with a four-lakh million-liter-per-day overhead tank constructed for each block, supplemented by two borewells and a sump for water storage.
The housing project in Birsanagar spans 48 acres and includes the construction of 9,592 flats across 23 blocks.
Of these, construction in Blocks 8 and 23 — comprising 644 flats (322 in each block) — has been completed, including finishing work.
However, work in the remaining blocks is progressing slowly.
A lottery was conducted among 5,366 applicants, selecting 644 beneficiaries for the ready flats.
So far, around 300 beneficiaries have deposited the full payment of Rs 4.31 lakh, while others are still completing their installments. Nearly 800 beneficiaries have paid the first installment of Rs 1.15 lakh, 500 have paid two instalments, and 400 have paid three.
Around 350 files are currently pending for loan approval in banks, which officials say has caused significant delays. Beneficiaries have reportedly been facing difficulties due to banks’ reluctance in processing loans.
Many applicants have been visiting banks repeatedly, only to be asked to return “tomorrow or later.”
Despite these hurdles, JNAC officials are confident that all pending works — including roads, electricity, and water — will be completed by December-end, paving the way for the beneficiaries to move into their new homes at the beginning of the new year.
