Congress Picks VD Satheesan as Kerala CM, Signals Generational Shift in State Politics

New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram (IANS): Congress names V.D. Satheesan as Kerala’s new Chief Minister after days of intense lobbying, speculation, and consultations stretching from Thiruvananthapuram to Delhi.

Senior Congress leaders Deepa Das Munshi, Mukul Wasnik, and Ajay Maken announced the decision in Delhi on Wednesday, formally elevating Satheesan as Kerala’s 13th Chief Minister and signalling a generational shift in the party’s state leadership.

The Congress high command delayed the announcement until the final round of consultations concluded in Delhi. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal met Rahul Gandhi before the leadership finalised the decision. Rahul Gandhi also informed senior leader Ramesh Chennithala over a phone call that Satheesan had secured the top post.

Satheesan’s elevation marks a major political milestone for the Congress leader, who emerged as one of the party’s strongest anti-Left voices in Kerala over the past few years.

Born in Kochi district and set to turn 62 later this month, Satheesan built his political career through Assembly debates and organisational work rather than factional politics. A lawyer by profession, he entered the Kerala Assembly from Paravur in 2001 and quickly gained recognition as one of the Congress party’s sharpest speakers.

Known for his aggressive attacks on the Left government, Satheesan used data-driven arguments, sarcasm, and sharp political timing to establish himself as a key Opposition figure.

His rise accelerated after the Congress-led UDF suffered a heavy defeat in the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections. The party appointed him Leader of the Opposition, a move many initially viewed as a compromise amid internal factional rivalry.

However, Satheesan transformed the post into a powerful political platform. He aggressively targeted the Pinarayi Vijayan government over issues including the gold smuggling case, AI camera controversy and law-and-order concerns, steadily emerging as the most visible face of anti-Left politics in the state.

Unlike several senior Congress leaders in Kerala, Satheesan largely stayed away from the traditional “A” and “I” faction camps that dominated the party for decades. His independent positioning helped him gain support among younger legislators and grassroots workers seeking generational change within Congress.

Critics within the party have often accused him of centralising decision-making and acting with political haste. Still, even rivals acknowledge that Satheesan currently enjoys one of the strongest public connections among Kerala Congress leaders.

Earlier in the day, Satheesan travelled with his family to Thiruvananthapuram and reached his official residence, where supporters had already gathered in large numbers. Minutes before the official announcement, he entered the residence without addressing the crowd.

As Satheesan prepares to move from the Opposition benches to the Chief Minister’s office, he faces expectations that extend beyond governance. His appointment reflects the Congress party’s attempt to project a younger, more aggressive, and media-savvy leadership to challenge outgoing Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and reshape Kerala’s political landscape.
