Jamshedpur, Nov 21: A major disruption in water supply hit several residential pockets of Mango on Friday after the main pipeline of Mango Water Supply Scheme was damaged during drainage excavation work conducted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) near Aashiana Anantara Apartment.

On receiving information about the disruption, Santosh Bhagat and Pintu Singh, two local representatives rushed to the spot and apprised MLA Saryu Roy of the situation.

They informed him that since morning, a dispute had been ongoing between the Drinking Water & Sanitation Department and the flyover construction company over who would bear the repair expenses.

According to the construction company, they had issued a written request to the department a year ago to shift the water pipeline before commencing the project.

However, the department allegedly did not take any action, resulting in repeated pipeline damage during excavation for drainage.

Following the update, MLA Saryu Roy directed officials of the Drinking Water & Sanitation Department and Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) to ensure immediate repairs and restore water supply at the earliest.

Acting promptly, officials along with the construction company completed the repair work and resumed supply to affected areas.

Representatives Pintu Singh and Santosh Bhagat further expressed concern that Hume pipes for drainage were being laid directly over the existing water pipeline, causing frequent breakage.

As per MLA Roy’s instructions, the work was halted temporarily and the excavation was filled up to prevent further damage.

The affected overhead tank under Zone No. 1 of the Mango Water Supply Scheme has a storage capacity of 25 lakh litres and caters to more than 5,000 households across Kumrum Basti, Samta Nagar, Mangal Colony, Jharkhand Basti, Parmeshwar Colony, Indira Colony, Chandrawati Nagar, Pardih and surrounding localities.

The sudden supply disruption created a severe water crisis in these neighbourhoods.

Local residents and representatives including Praveen Singh, Lalu Gaur, Manoj Gupta, Prem Saxena, Tuntun Singh, Ajay, and Jeetendra Saw were present throughout the incident and coordination efforts.

Authorities are expected to hold a joint review to prevent recurrence as construction for the flyover and drainage continues in the area.
