Padma Shri Prof. Anil K Gupta addresses city school students at NML


Jamshedpur : Prof. Anil K. Gupta, Executive Vice Chair of National Innovation Foundation who is also a Professor at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Visiting Professor of Innovation Management in Emerging Markets, European Business School, Berlin addresses more than 350 school students of Jamshedpur city in CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory, Auditorium.

Dr. S. Srikanth, Director, NML welcomed the gatherings and Speaker Prof. Gupta. Dr. Srikanth said, “Value of science and innovation should be translated to the society for whom it is exactly meant for.

The innovation leading to the research and ultimately to the product generation should be made available for the benefit of the common mass”.

Prof. Gupta spoke on “Grassroot Innovations for Inclusive Development”. Focussing on the importance of creativity and innovation, Prof. Gupta initiated his talk by projecting a question how one can redesign a matchstick so that we can save more wood out of the stick to avoid wastage? He ignited the young minds and looked for alternate designs for the matchstick from the students present.

Prof. Gupta cited numerous examples received at the National Innovation Foundation from the students of all age groups across the country.

He mentioned the work relating to generation of new ideas regarding items ranging from knife projector to shoe vacuum cleaner to automatic food making machine to co-paddling the rickshaw to brooming while cycling to Bicycle refrigerator for rural areas to washing machine mounted on scooter to motorcycle’s use as a tractor to compressed air car, and many more.

The main purpose of the talk was to encourage the students to come forward with their ideas. Creativity can be found at all levels and among all ages.

Anybody and everybody can do anything and everything. There is no task that cannot have further better way of doing. Prof. Gupta also mentioned that Technology , Institution and Culture are the three pillars of development and sustainability. Open source standards of excellence should be the main point of reference for further progress in our modern society.

While citing NML’s latest innovation relating to Graphene during the question answer session Prof. Gupta mentioned, ideas generated by an individual in a society can be technically established by an expert which may further be modified to suit the requirement of an enterprise/ industry.

Earlier Tata Steel Global Research Programme Chief, Sumitesh Das introduced Prof. Gupta to the audience. Other than students from Vidya Bharati Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Telco; Carmel Junior College, Sonari;. D.B.M.S, Kadma and KPS Burmamines, dignitaries from Tata Steel, NML AcSIR students, scientists, technologists attended the talk.
