Jamshedpur, Aug 7: More than 50% of students have failed or received carry-forward status in Kolhan University’s undergraduate Semester-2 exams for the 2023–27 session, sparking outrage among students and academic circles. Results published on the university’s official website reveal alarming failure rates, with some colleges and departments recording 90% to 100% student failure. Entire departments at institutions such as ABM College, Jamshedpur Workers’ College, JLNM College Chakradharpur, Women’s College Chaibasa and others reported 100% failure in certain subjects.

Subject-specific data shows that 80% of Hindi students at Ghatsila College failed, while more than 60% failed in History. Mathematics results were also concerning, with a 55% failure rate in Ghatsila College and 80% at Graduate College. Chemistry saw a 50% failure rate, Economics 60% and in several colleges, Political Science and Hindi failure rates ranged from 90% to 100%. Despite automatic promotion under the carry-forward policy, students must still clear their failed subjects in future exams.

This is being called the worst academic result in the university’s history. Student bodies have accused the administration of flawed evaluation, demanding rechecking and transparency. “The marks do not reflect our answers,” said a student leader. In response, university officials claimed marks were given based on students’ actual responses. The session itself has been delayed by nearly a year, adding to student frustration.
