Ol Chiki, A Strong Pillar of Santhal Identity: President Murmu at Karandih Centenary Celebrations in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: President Droupadi Murmu praised the “unprecedented contribution” of Santhali writers in protecting the self-respect and existence of tribal communities during her visit to Karandih on Monday. She added that the All India Santali Writers Association works tirelessly all year-round for the upliftment of the Ol Chiki script, with members dedicating their personal time to this cause.

The President emphasized that these writers are carrying forward the legacy of Pandit Raghunath Murmu (the creator of the script). Highlighting a major milestone, she mentioned that to mark the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Constitution of India has been published in the Ol Chiki script. She described this as a definitive step toward empowering the Santhali society.

“Since Santhali is included in the Eighth Schedule, our people must be aware of the rules and regulations that govern the country,” the President stated. She remarked that due to a lack of legal awareness, many innocent individuals have faced imprisonment. She urged that since literacy levels are still not where they should be, such vital information must be available in their native language.

Reflecting on her journey, she said, “I have reached this position today because of the love of my people and the blessings of our deities. It is my duty to work for my society and our script.” She acknowledged the global presence of the Santhali diaspora, from major metropolises to various cities worldwide, noting that the high number of graduates among tribals ensures their rights. She concluded by stating that Ol Chiki is the core identity of the Santhals, fostering unity within the community—a unity reflected in today’s centenary celebrations.
