Operation against Maoists to continue
Jamshedpur: Amol V Honkar, who took over as the new senior superintendent of police East Singhbhum district, has said that steps would be taken to form �Mohalla Committees� in different areas to curb crime rate.
He said that based on the Maharashtra police initiative steps would be adopted to engage with the public more often.
As per the plans the police stations in the district will hold meetings every month with the members of the citizen committees formed in their jurisdictions to seek suggestions from them and also suggest opinions for curbing neighbourhood crimes.
Amol V Honkar joined here as East Singhbhum district senior superintendent of police last evening. He took his charge from his Richard Lakra at the SSP office. After assuming his new assignment, Honkar held a meeting with his sub-ordinates took stock of the law and order situation of the city.
Superintendent of police (city) Kartik S and deputy superintendents of police as well as the officers-in-charge of various police stations attended the meeting.
Honkar, who served as Rail SP in Tatanagar during 2006, said that he is very well acquainted with the city and would be able to serve the city in much efficient manner. He went on to add that �mohalla committee� or the citizen-police amity is soon going to be implemented soon.
These committees will be an interface between the citizens and the police to look into areas like settling traffic congestion and extortion problems.
The SSP went on to add that involving the community and educating them may effectively address the crime. The concept of community policing has also been introduced in many states. In this initiative, community support is sought to help police in crime prevention, giving information about any anti-social or criminal activity in the area and helping police in arrest of proclaimed offenders.
�We will also increase the night vigil and patrolling. Special check points would be installed during late hours in various sectors.
Notably, of late there has been a spurt in the crime of loot, snatching, eve-teasing and drunk-driving at the steel city. The people, especially the women and girls are not safe as the criminals and other miscreants have a free run committing loot and snatching with impunity.
When questioned on the Maoists front, Honkar said that the operation against the ultras would continue.
