New Delhi (IANS): In a major policy shift aimed at curbing paper leaks and systemic breaches, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced on Friday that the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) will transition to a computer-based examination (CBT) model starting next year.
Addressing the media in the capital, Pradhan emphasized that the move to an online format is a “mechanical necessity” to restore the integrity of India’s premier medical entrance test. The decision follows the massive outcry and subsequent cancellation of the NEET-UG 2026 exam originally held on May 3.
Key Highlights for Candidates
-
Re-Examination Date: The NTA will conduct the NEET-UG re-exam on June 21, 2026.
-
Admit Cards: Aspirants can download their new admit cards starting June 14, 2026.
-
City Selection: A one-week window will allow students to choose their preferred city for the re-examination.
-
No Extra Fees: The NTA will refund the original exam fees and will not charge any additional amount for the re-test.
-
OMR Relaxation: For the upcoming re-test (which remains paper-based), students will receive 15 minutes of extra time specifically for filling in details on the OMR sheet.
“War Against the Education Mafia”
Pradhan described the current crisis as a “long and sustained fight” against the education mafia. While acknowledging a “breakdown in the chain of command,” he confirmed that the Radhakrishnan Committee’s recommendations are being implemented to fortify the testing process.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is currently spearheading a multi-level probe to identify how the “fool-proof” system was compromised. “The entire government machinery will ensure no malpractices happen this time,” Pradhan assured.
