Monsoon arrives early in Jharkhand with weak showers

Jamshedpur, June 13: The southwest monsoon has knocked on Jharkhand’s doors earlier than expected this year, but the much-awaited rains have yet to gain the intensity needed to ease concerns over a growing rainfall deficit.
While the monsoon entered the state five days ahead of last year’s schedule and three days before the normal date, overall precipitation remains around 25- 30 per cent below normal, according to meteorological data.
The monsoon reached Jharkhand on Friday after advancing rapidly through eastern India.
Weathermen expect it to cover the remaining parts of the state within the next two to three days.
However, despite its timely arrival, rainfall activity has remained patchy, with many districts receiving only light to moderate showers.
Meteorologists attribute the shortfall to weak monsoon currents and the delayed formation of favourable weather systems over the Bay of Bengal. As a result, several regions continue to await widespread and sustained rainfall.
The deficit is being closely monitored as June is a crucial month for agricultural preparations ahead of the kharif cropping season.
The arrival of the monsoon traditionally marks the beginning of paddy transplantation and sowing activities across Jharkhand.
Farmers in many districts have welcomed the early onset, but agricultural experts caution that a good monsoon is measured not by its arrival date alone but by the consistency and distribution of rainfall throughout the season. Inadequate rainfall during the initial phase can affect soil moisture levels and delay farm operations.
In response, the state government has directed district administrations and agriculture officials to remain vigilant. Preparatory measures are being reviewed to ensure that farmers have access to seeds, irrigation facilities and technical support should rainfall remain erratic.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast an increase in rainfall activity over the coming days, supported by a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal.
Several districts are likely to experience thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and moderate to heavy rain. Weather alerts have been issued for parts of northern and eastern Jharkhand, where wind speeds could reach 50 to 60 kmph.
Weather experts remain optimistic that the monsoon will strengthen during the second half of June. Historically, Jharkhand has witnessed periods of initial deficit followed by substantial recovery once monsoon systems become fully active. If the predicted weather conditions materialise, the state could witness a significant improvement in rainfall distribution, helping bridge the current deficit and boosting prospects for agriculture, reservoirs and groundwater recharge.
For now, the monsoon has arrived with promise, but Jharkhand continues to wait for the widespread rains that will determine the success of the season.
