Mining Task Force meeting: CCTVs made mandatory at sand stock yards

Jamshedpur:  The administration has issued firm instructions to strengthen monitoring of all sand stock yards. CCTV cameras will be installed at every sand dealer’s yard, with footage regularly monitored by authorities.

In the District Mining Task Force meeting convened at the Collectorate Auditorium under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi, a comprehensive review was undertaken on the measures being implemented to curb illegal mining, transportation, and storage of minerals in East Singhbhum.

The meeting saw the participation of Senior Superintendent of Police Piyush Pandey, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Rishabh Garg, ADM Law and Order Bhagirath Prasad, DTO Dhananjay, SDM Ghatshila Sunil Chandra, SDM Dhalbhum Chandrajit Singh, SDPO Ghatshila Ajit Kujur, DMO Satish Nayak and senior officials from the police, transport, forest, and pollution control departments.

The task force reviewed in detail the actions taken so far to prevent illegal excavation and transportation of sand from the Swarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, as well as reports of illicit activity in forest areas. The status of vehicle seizures, including those operating without registration plates or carrying overloaded consignments, was also assessed. Officials presented updates on the penal action taken against errant vehicle owners and operators engaged in unlawful mineral trade.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner issued firm instructions to strengthen monitoring of all sand stock yards. He directed that CCTV cameras must be installed at every sand dealer’s yard, with footage regularly monitored by authorities. In addition, challans must be issued mandatorily for every instance of sand lifting to ensure accountability and transparency. Surprise inspections were also ordered to ensure that sand is not excavated from vulnerable points such as riverbanks near bridges and culverts.

The DC directed the District Mining Officer to intensify campaigns to dismantle illegal sand trade networks and stop black marketing practices. He stressed the need to auction seized minor minerals promptly so that the district’s revenue base can be strengthened while ensuring that legitimate sand demand is met in a regulated manner.

All Circle Officers and Police Station Incharges were categorically instructed to take decisive action against mining mafias operating in their respective jurisdictions. “The campaign to curb illegal mining must be run in a sustained and intensive manner. Any negligence in this work will not be tolerated,” said the DC, warning that strict punitive measures will be taken against violators, operators, and vehicle owners under the relevant rules.

The Deputy Commissioner highlighted the importance of coordination between the mining, police, forest, transport, and pollution control departments. He directed that quick information exchange be ensured among all agencies so that illegal activities can be tracked in real time and curbed effectively.

“Protection of mineral wealth, increase in government revenue, and safeguarding the environment are collective responsibilities,” the Deputy Commissioner said, adding that the administration will adopt a tough stand at every level to ensure mining activities remain strictly within the ambit of law.
