Massive tribal rally in Seraikela opposes Kurmi/Mahato demand for ST status

Jamshedpur: Thousands of tribals from different communities united on Thursday in Seraikela to protest against the demand of Kurmi/Mahato groups seeking inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list.

The rally brought the town to a standstill for several hours as demonstrators marched to the district collectorate, submitting a memorandum addressed to the President of India, the Governor, the Chief Minister, and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes.

Leading the rally, Manoj Kumar Soy declared, “Kurmis were never tribals, nor will they ever be. Tribals are born, not made.”

The gathering witnessed slogans, symbolic demonstrations, and strong warnings of intensified agitation if the government takes no concrete action.

Activists such as Sawan Soy, Sadhu Ho, and Yudhishthir Sardar emphasized that the movement would continue until justice is ensured and tribal identity safeguarded.

They cautioned that failure to address their concerns could lead to large-scale economic blockades and prolonged rail protests.

The rally was marked by massive participation of tribal leaders, social activists, and youths

Organizers described the event as just the beginning of a larger struggle to “protect tribal rights and identity” against what they called an “unjust and baseless demand” for ST status by the Kurmi/Mahato community.
