Jamshedpur, June 7: Growing public frustration over the delay in the construction of a Railway Overbridge (ROB) at the Barigora railway crossing spilled onto the streets on Sunday, as hundreds of residents staged a one-day symbolic sit-in near the level crossing demanding immediate action.
The protesters alleged that the railway gate remains closed for prolonged periods throughout the day, leading to severe traffic congestion and disrupting the daily lives of thousands of commuters. They said schoolchildren, patients, office-goers and emergency service users are among those most affected by the recurring bottlenecks.
The demonstration was led by Janata Dal (United) city secretary Vikas Kumar and local Mukhiya Sunita Nag.
Addressing the gathering, the leaders highlighted the hardships faced by residents and urged the railway authorities to expedite the long-pending overbridge project. They warned that the agitation would be intensified if tangible progress was not made soon.
The protesters also demanded that the issue be strongly pursued before the Railway Board and the state government, describing the proposed ROB as a critical public infrastructure project for the area.
Vikas Kumar and Sunita Nag assured residents that they would meet senior officials of the Chakradharpur Railway Division and press for swift action to accelerate the construction process.
Among those present at the protest were MLA representative Mithun Chakravarty, labour union leader Ambuj Thakur, several social activists and a large number of local residents.
The demonstrators reiterated that the overbridge is essential to easing traffic congestion and ensuring smoother and safer movement across the busy railway crossing.
