Saryu Roy Raises Mango Water Crisis in Assembly

Ranchi/Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur West MLA Saryu Roy raised serious concerns in the Assembly over the deteriorating condition of the Mango drinking water supply project, calling the government’s response “unsatisfactory” and accusing the Urban Development Department of concealing facts and misrepresenting ground reality.

Roy pointed out that the Baliguma water tower supply has stalled because the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has not completed the elevated corridor work.

He said the government’s reply was misleading, as NHAI had already granted a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the project on June 24, 2025. “Authorities planned to carry out the elevated corridor work above and the pipeline work below, yet no progress has been made,” he said.

Highlighting prolonged neglect, Roy said the project suffered between 2019 and 2024 due to lack of attention. He noted that authorities failed to upgrade key infrastructure, including intake wells, the water treatment plant, and old pump sets at water towers. After becoming MLA, he facilitated the procurement of a 375 HP pump for the intake well, a 150 HP pump for the treatment plant, and centrifugal pump sets for Zones 1, 2, 3, and 5.

However, he said the government has yet to approve the construction of an RCC pump house, further delaying improvements.

Roy added that despite raising multiple supplementary questions in the Assembly, the government only stated that the work is “under process” and failed to provide clear answers. The government also admitted that water supply does not reach Mango’s tail-end areas.

Highlighting irregular supply, Roy said residents often receive water at odd hours, sometimes as late as 1 AM or 2 AM, causing major inconvenience. He demanded a fixed and reliable water supply schedule.

He also recalled that he had earlier urged the government to transfer the project from the Drinking Water and Sanitation Department to the Urban Development Department for better efficiency. “Instead of improving, the situation has worsened,” Roy said, stressing the urgent need for corrective action.
