Tatanagar Station to Get High-Tech, Japan-Style “Sleeping Pods”

Railway Issues Tender for Capsule Hotel

Jamshedpur, March 29 — Tatanagar Station is set to transform the passenger experience with a modern gift from the Indian Railways. The Chakradharpur Division has officially ordered the conversion of a railway canteen, closed for the last two years, into a high-tech “Sleeping Pod” facility. Modeled after Japan’s famous capsule hotels, these pods will offer travelers a safe, comfortable, and highly affordable stay within the station premises.

This new facility will provide a budget-friendly alternative to Jamshedpur’s expensive hotels and lodges, offering significant relief to budget travelers and passengers arriving on late-night trains.

Modern Amenities: AC, Wi-Fi, and Personal Lockers

The proposed sleeping pods will feature full air-conditioning and a suite of modern amenities. Passengers will have access to high-speed Wi-Fi, private lockers, and individual mobile charging points.

Crucially, the railway will charge passengers on an hourly basis, sparing them from paying full-day hotel rates. Following a detailed survey by the Commercial Department in January 2026 under the direction of the Divisional Railway Manager, the authorities have now officially opened the tendering process.

Solving the Shortage of Retiring Rooms

Currently, the retiring rooms and dormitories at Tatanagar Station stay consistently full, often leaving passengers stranded. The introduction of sleeping pods will ease the burden on existing infrastructure and provide a global-standard alternative within the station walls.

Tatanagar joins the ranks of major stations like Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, and Bhopal in adopting this international trend. Officials view the repurposing of the vacant canteen space as a major step forward in passenger convenience.

Bidders Race for Contracts as Work Nears Commencement

The issuance of the tender has triggered a rush among potential operators at Tatanagar Station and the Chakradharpur Divisional Office. Experts believe the project will not only benefit passengers but also significantly boost railway revenue.

Construction will begin on a war footing as soon as the railway awards the contract. Within a few months, Tatanagar Station expects to offer these international-grade facilities, giving the terminal a modern, high-tech facelift.
