Jamshedpur, Nov 16: The Bagbera police have arrested Sumit Kumar, the prime accused in the Garabasa axe attack case that occurred on February 16.
Sumit had been absconding for the past nine months. His arrest is said to be part of a special operation initiated after the Jharkhand High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea.
The case was registered on the basis of a complaint filed by victim Ajit Singh Chandravanshi, who alleged that Sumit and several others forcibly entered his house in the evening and attacked him with axes and other weapons. Ajit sustained deep head injuries that required 22 stitches, while his wife Suman Devi also received serious head injuries requiring 12 stitches.
The FIR further stated that on the day of the incident, Sumit’s maternal uncle, Lalbabu Chandravanshi, attacked with a bhujali (sharp-edged weapon). Lalbabu was later granted bail by the court.
According to police records, Sumit Kumar has a significant criminal history, with more than four cases registered against him at Bagbera police station, including charges of attempt to murder, robbery, and assault. Investigations have also revealed the involvement of Sumit’s grandfather, Ras Bihari Rawani.
He is accused of attacking Suman Devi with an iron tong, causing grievous injuries. Ras Bihari has also been absconding for the past nine months.
A total of eight individuals were named as accused in the case. While some have been sent to jail, others have secured bail from the High Court.
Following Sumit’s arrest, police have intensified their search for the remaining absconding accused, especially Ras Bihari Rawani.
