Low pressure over Bay of Bengal triggers rain in Jamshedpur

Jamshedpur: A developing low pressure area over the north Bay of Bengal triggered widespread rainfall across Jharkhand on Friday, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue alerts for heavy to very heavy rain and thunderstorms over the next five days.

Supported by an active monsoon trough passing through Jamshedpur and adjoining regions, the system is expected to intensify further, bringing stormy weather, gusty winds, and potential flooding in several districts.

On July 25, South-Eastern Jharkhand, while other regions, except the North-West, received heavy showers. July 26: Southern and Central Jharkhand may witness heavy to very heavy rain in isolated areas. North-Western districts could also receive heavy rainfall. Thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty winds will continue.

July 27–28: The rain belt will expand to cover Southern, Central, and North-Western parts of the state, with thunderstorm activity persisting. July 29: Widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall is forecast across isolated areas in the entire state, raising concerns of waterlogging and disruption.

The low pressure area is associated with a cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level, tilting southwestward with height. It is likely to strengthen into a well-marked low pressure system and move towards West Bengal and northern Odisha coasts within 48 hours.

The monsoon trough remains active, running through Sri Ganganagar, Sirsa, Meerut, Hardoi, Patna, Jamshedpur, and Digha, connecting directly to the center of the system.

Residents are advised to remain cautious about localized flooding, waterlogging, and disruptions in transport and electricity services. The IMD has also urged farmers to take necessary precautions to protect their standing crops from potential damage.
